AFTER DRIBBLE (POST-MICTURITION DRIBBLE)

January 01, 2023 2 min read

Many men suffer with after dribble which is medically known as post-micturition dribble (PMD). It can affect men at any age and occurs when you feel a few drops of urine discharge after urination. After dribble unwillingly happens as a result of urine still remaining in the urethra after emptying your bladder.

It tends to be caused by the muscles that encompass the urethra not contracting properly, leaving urine in the tube even though your bladder may feel empty. These excess drops typically transfer onto your clothing after finishing using the toilet.

The underlying issue of after dribble is typically caused by weakened pelvic floor muscles. To improve the strength of your pelvic floor muscles, exercises such as Kegel exercises can be performed that if practiced properly, can greatly improve the strength of those muscles. A step-by-step guide on how to do Kegel exercises can be found here.

Weakened pelvic floor muscles can happen for a few reasons, a few being:

  1. A ‘delicate bulbourethral muscle in men’ can cause the inner part of the urethra to sag a little, meaning urine can accumulate after urination and as a result of muscle movement, urine is released
  2. A lack of muscles supporting the urethra
  3. An operation of an enlarged prostate gland
  4. Regular straining to clear your bowels usually when constipation occurs
  5. Consistent coughing which places pressure on the bladder and pelvic floor muscles
  6. Obesity
  7. Neurological loss
  8. Routine heavy weight lifting
